What type of Expressway is this?

Dear Editor

May I request for a space in your popular newspaper to ask this question that has been agitating my mind for quite a long time: What type of road is the Reynold Construction Company Limited (RCC) building along the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway that has no junction or roundabout at major strategic points where rural roads join or link up the communities along the route with the expressway for easy access?

It is baffling that the RCC has been constructing the expressway at very slow pace (or snail speed) for more than twenty-two (22) years now, since 1999 under the defunct administration of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo till date without much impactful progress.

Worse still, the foreign construction firm has, no doubt, created very huge confusion by building flawlessly long barricading concrete wall demarcating the road from Amawbia junction flyover all through Umuokpu/Nawfia/Enugu-Agidi/Abba Junction without any space for travelers to branch off from the expressway to the towns along the stretch until one gets to Umunya junction.

Again, the protruding concrete works constructed at major junctions along the expressway, like Nawfia junction, Umuokpu junction, Enugwu-Ukwu junction and Awkuzu junction, etc. can best be described as death traps.

Apart from occupying almost half of the expressway, these concrete structures that are very high and thick and hardly visibly from close distance, will definitely constitute major cause of frequent accidents or mishaps if not reduced or dismantled completely.

  • The new design of the Onitsha-Awka-Enugu Expressway being reconstructed by the RCC, appears to
  • be totally different from what Nigerian motorists are familiar with and therefore, poses a serious
  • danger to drivers and commuters at the end of the day. It is better that the Federal Ministry of Works should monitor the ongoing reconstruction of the expressway to ensure that he contractor does not expose innocent citizens of Nigeria to avoidable premature deaths due to road mishaps that will be occurring along that Onitsha-Awka-Enugu Expressway if necessary corrections are not effected at this stage.
