Traders at the new Artisan Goat Market Enugu, have cried out to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of the state over alleged plans by government to eject them from their present location, urging him to urgently intervene in the matter.

Our correspondent reports that the move of sending the traders packing from the popular New Artisan Goat market is pegged on a court pronouncement with writ of execution in respect of suit No E/539/2005, which granted part of the land which constitutes the goat market to a private person.

They said the call for the state government’s intervention became necessary as the police and officials of the state judiciary were bent on executing the writ.

Soliciting for the governor’s intervention via a human rights organisation, Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN), the traders said the development, if allowed, would throw them and family members into untold hardship.

CRRAN, in a letter signed by its president, Barrister Olu Omotayo, to the governor, argued against the move, opining that “all that parcel of land which constitutes the Goat Market belongs to the Enugu State Government by virtue of Enugu State of Nigeria Official Gazette No.1, Vol 15, of 6th April 2006, which gave Notice of Public lands Acquisition (Acquisition Notice) and designated the place as Goat Market.”

It further said that, the suit, having been determined before the official gazette, any citizen’s interest in any land within the gazetted Goat Market could only be compensated through payment as provided by law. It, therefore, sought appropriate government action along that line.
