Dear Editor

Anambra Int’l Airport needs good roads

The completion of the magnificent Anambra State International Cargo and Passenger Airport, Umueri, in Anambra East Local Government Area, which was symbolically confirmed by the successful test-run flight ceremony on Friday, 30th April, 2021, with safe landing of three aircrafts, will no doubt, catapult the state to global limelight.

Governor Willie Maduabuchi Obiano (Akpokuedike Global) deserves commendation for accomplishing the herculean task and delivering one of his electoral promises to bequeath the development-conscious Ndi Anambra such a gigantic legacy airport project. Certainly, nobody ever anticipated it could be accomplished within a record time of just fifteen (15) months. The marvelous aspect of the airport project is that its construction progressed despite knotty obstacles occasioned by the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic with asphyxiating effects on general humanity, climaxing in protracted global lockdown for greater part of last year (2020).

However, the deplorable conditions of major thoroughfares leading to the Umueri Airport calls for quick action by both the Federal and State Governments before the official commissioning of the airport, in view of concomitant higher tempo of vehicular traffic, tourism, business and commercial activities in that axis, and indeed the entire state when the chips are down.

It is a step in the right direction that Obiano also embarked on the construction of a new dual-carriage-way to the airport from Onitsha-Enugu Expressway, somewhere at Umunya through Nteje to Umueri, but the bulk of anticipated clientele to patronize the airport are mainly traders and industrialists based at Onitsha and surrounding towns. Hence, there is compelling need to provide a world class network of motorable roads to access the airport from the four cardinal points of the state. The existing Onitsha-Nkwelle-Nsugbe-Otuocha-Anaku-Adani Road is in very bad shape and constitutes death trap to commuters and needs to be expanded or dualized for easy traffic flow.

OYE ELUEMUNO, Awka.
