One of the worst things that could happen to a woman is to be raped. It could be traumatic if the act results in conception (pregnancy). This could be very devastating to the victim. Not only does she have to deal with the rape; she has to bother about caring for the pregnancy.

Feminine Corner went to town to sample the reactions of people to the question of what they would do with a rape-induced pregnancy.

Mr. Michael John says, “The baby didn’t do anything wrong. The baby is completely innocent. Women should not get an abortion if they are raped because they are killing a human being which is just as bad as murder and against the law”.

Mrs. June Debby says, “If a woman aborts her child it can damage her womb. It is better for her to keep the pregnancy because it can be a big risk if she aborts it”.

Mrs. Solomon Victoria says, “Women should be allowed to control what happens to their bodies. I am not a fan of abortion, but I am a fan of women having the right to have that option on the table”.

Mr. Caleb Johnson says, “A woman who kills her own child is worse than a man who rapes. It’s not the baby’s fault. Why should they suffer? Everyone deserves a chance at life. Many women who get abortions end up regretting their mistake”.

Mr. Nonso Justin says, “You can’t just terminate a life that is growing inside of you. It is against my belief. No matter how painful it is, she shouldn’t abort the pregnancy. The raped woman should cling to those things that make her happy always just so as not to remember that terrible moment. No one knows the future; the child might become great in life”.

Mr. Uche Kefas says, “If she doesn’t want to become pregnant she can terminate the pregnancy if wants to. Even if the pregnancy did not come through abortion, it should be open to any woman who wants to”.

Mrs. Loveth Afam says, “Rape is obviously a horrific crime that no one deserves to go through. However, life is about doing the right thing, regardless of the situation. Terminating an innocent child’s life is obviously not the right thing to do. Some may say that there is no point bringing an unwanted baby into the world but that is not true because there are thousands of families that can’t have babies and would be delighted with the opportunity to adopt one”.

Mr. Daniel Akpe says, “Rape should not be an excuse for abortion. Don’t blame it on the child for what happened to you. Love your children. They’re still your offspring. There is only one time when abortion should be permitted and that’s when the birth is a threat to the mother’s health”.

Mrs. Tochukwu Joseph says, “Even if you got pregnant from rape, that does not mean you should take a way someone else’s life. Rape is a sin likewise killing someone”.

Mr. Obi Aka says, “Being raped is something one can’t forget. You may want to abort because whenever you see the baby it will remind you of what happened. It wasn’t the baby’s fault so why kill him or her? You are killing an innocent human being. Babies have feelings. If you don’t want the baby, you can give the baby up for adoption but don’t kill”.

Mr. Okechukwu John Paul says, “It depends on whether she is capable to take the responsibility of being a mother”.

Mr. Anthony Nonso says a girl in such a situation should not abort the baby, because what has happened has happened and it’s neither the woman’s fault nor that of the baby. That baby might turn out to be the person to save her life tomorrow. Keep the baby and back it up with prayers.

It is possible to carry a baby from rape through the help of God, counseling and support from friends and relations. Jeremiah 1:5 says, “before I formed thee in the womb I knew thee and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee; and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”

It is a sin to abort or terminate a pregnancy that God has formed in a womb.
