The first female vice chancellor of the University of Calabar (UniCal), Professor Florence Obi, who emerged from a 13-man contest, will officially assume duty on December 1, 2020, our reporter has learnt.

Prof Obi, who is the 11th substantive vice chancellor of the institution, is a former deputy vice chancellor (Academic) and professor of special need education as well as a one-time commissioner for women affairs in Cross River state.

The pro-chancellor of the university, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, in an interview with journalists, Friday, shortly after the selection process, said the governing council was transparent in the selection process. She said: “We asked the university community to ensure a transparent, open, just and fair process and that was what we got. We now have a brand-new VC and the first female VC of UniCal.”

On expectations from the new VC, Sen Nwaogu believed that, government being a continuum, the VC-elect was expected to build on the legacies of her predecessor and, at the same time, set new goals for her administration. “She’ll be an integrative agent. She knows the challenges of the institution, she knows the loopholes, and she knows how to motivate staff. As the first female VC and a mother too, she should be able to integrate and bring together those who contested with her,” she added.

In her remarks, the VC-elect said she would run an all-inclusive government, saying the process which brought her emergence was fair. “I return all glory to God for this victory. I’ve just received my appointment letter from the 11th Council as VC-elect. The process was free and fair and I promise to run an inclusive administration ” she stated.

Professor Florence Obi, a mother of 4, hails from Bansan-Osokom, in Boki local government area of Cross River state. She attended St. Bridget Primary School, Ogep-Osokom in Boki local government area of Cross River state, St. Thomas’s Teacher Training College, Ogoja, University of Jos, Jos, Plateau state, Jordan Hill College, Glasgow-Scotland and the University of Calabar, where she obtained PhD in Psychology of Education.
