Stop senseless killings in Nigeria

Dear Editor

May I beg for a space in your widely read newspaper to air my views about the ongoing massacre and spilling of the blood of innocent Nigerians by various known and unknown groups for reasons best known to them. Name them: Boko Haram, armed AK-47 nomadic Fulani herdsmen, Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP), unknown gunmen, and even the military, police and para-military forces indicted for extra-judicial killings too.

Apart from the period of the Nigerian Civil War, the nation has not witnessed the type of massive killings and maiming of people as we are witnessing it today. It is true that the country was already enmeshed in a wave of insurgency, especially by the Niger Delta militants and Boko Haram jihadists before the advent of incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

However, the orgy of bloodletting seems to have assumed very frightening and colossal scale under the stewardship of the All Progressives’ Congress, APC-led federal government. The sudden escalation of banditry and the brazen manner of diversification of criminalities by these blood-thirsty marauders into kidnapping (for ramson), hostage taking of schoolchildren, raping, killings, destruction of communities and hounding of indigenous nationalities from their homestead into internally displaced people’s (IDP) camps, are really not what Nigerians wanted by voting APC/Buhari in 2015 and 2019.

Buhari promised, in 2015, that Boko Haram insurgency would be totally decimated within six months of his presidency which most likely, made the electorate to give APC overwhelming votes to unseat the former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Sadly, instead of taming the rampaging insurgents, their atrocious activities have spread to other parts of the country, including North-West, Middle Belt and even several parts of the South-East and South-West territories in recent times with daily casualties running into thousands of Nigerians being brutally murdered, maimed, kidnapped and innumerable communities destroyed and millions of people being forced to take refuge at IDPs while the nation is not at war.

All these happening under the watch of the APC/Buhari’s FG apparently signpost a colossal failure and derailment of the expectations of Nigerians. So, the presidency must act fast to restore waned public confidence and save the country from imminent collapse due to the raging mass killings which could be responsible for the rife agitations for secession different ethnic nationalities in the country.

Michael Suswan, Gboko.
