President Muhammadu Buhari’s repeated claim that he would lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty sounds like a mirage and a glaring impossibility. Everybody knows that the President cannot lift 100 million out of poverty with the massive killings, kidnapping and banditry going on across the nation under his watch without any convincing efforts to curb the gory trend.
With the worsening economic hardships, liquidation of industries with sacking of workers, displacement of sizeable percentage of Nigerians by AK-47 wielding herdsmen from their communities into refuge at various Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDP) camps scattered in virtually all the 36 states of the federation and Abuja FCT, looming second recession and other daunting challenges facing the country, one doubts if the president really meant his words.
It is however, not surprising that Buhari and the presidency are still optimistic of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty within the remaining short span of his tenure which he could not accomplish since more than six years he has been in Aso Rock, due to the fact that he neither travels to anywhere nor does he care to find out the extent the masses are suffering because of the bad governance the All Progressives’ Congress, APC-led FG.
If one may suggest, the presidency should conduct a public opinion poll to ascertain how Nigerians are viewing the continuation of the protracted suffering, economic deprivations and asphyxiating consequences of his policy somersaults, glaring lack of focus and purposeless leadership of the present administration which could be adjudged the worst regime Nigerians have ever witnessed, except, perhaps, only the brief spell of the defunct military junta’s dictatorship led by him (Buhari) and late General Tunde Idiagbon between January 1983 and July 1985.
However, let us keep our fingers crossed that the president will be able to convince China, Britain, Saudi Arabia and a host of unholy lenders collaborating with the APC’s regime to escalate Nigeria’s debts profile as a way of penalizing the present generation of Nigerians and generations yet unborn.
