Onitsha South Archdeaconry emerge champions of Bishop Owen Nwokolo Football Tournament

Onitsha South Archdeaconry of the Anglican Church at the weekend emerged winners of the maiden edition of Most Rev Owen Nwokolo football tournament for Christian fathers in the Church, Orient Sports reports.

They defeated Oyi Archdeaconry 6-5 on a penalty shootout after a 1-1 regulation time draw. The winners went home with the N300, 000-star prize while Oyi Archdeaconry received  N200, 000, Just as Awada Archdeaconry who won the third-place match was rewarded with N100, 000.

Orient Sports reports that the thrilling tournament was sponsored by the All Progressive Congress, APC, Governorship Candidate on November 6, 2021, governorship election in Anambra State, Senator Andy Uba.

The tournament, our checks revealed, was meant for men not younger than 35 years.

The Anglican Bishop on the Niger, His Grace, Most Rev. Owen Nwokolo was in no less a pleasant mood after the tournament as he told Orient Sports exclusively that the football tournament was designed to further the gospel through sports, adding that ‘to serve God effectively requires sound body and mind’.

“I’m more than happy that this tournament ended successfully without any injury to any of the players, coaches or officials, even the spectators. 
“You can see it on the faces of everyone here present. We have enjoyed a thrilling competition and I must commend the organisers, the winners have won fairly and deserved their victory which is a product of Hard work because luck comes from hard work. 

“We are inspired by the need to ensure healthy living amongst the church which helps in the spiritual life of the people. “All works and no play, they say, makes Jack a dull boy. We want to ensure that our fathers in the church returned to the church, play more roles in church activities and we believe that competitions like this will help a lot”, Bishop Nwokolo said.

He further disclosed that the competition won’t be a one-off thing, promising that it will continue ’till Christ comes back again.
