By Phil Okose, OnitshaGunmen, numbering about 20, shot dead a police escort attached to the owner of a petrol filling station in Nkpor, Idemili North local government area, Anambra state, at about 3.30pm on Tuesday. It was gathered that the men, who were in four vehicles, a Venza, a Kia, a Sienna and a Toyota Highlander, on sighting the police escort, shot at him while his principal and his driver went into hiding immediately. The incident caused pandemonium in the neighbourhood and forced residents and passers-by to desert the scene of the shooting. An eyewitness told this reporter that the gunmen drove away comfortably, unchallenged and out of the filling station after the incident.“Their target was the policeman. They did not want to kill the owner of the filling station or his driver. The policeman was not taken unawares because he saw them coming but (probably) thought it was to procure fuel.”
“It was when they opened fire that all those within disappeared and the next thing was the policeman lying lifeless on the ground,” he hinted further.
