A planned rally by an unnamed civil society group purportedly billed for Aba and Umuahia on Monday, June 14, 2021, could not hold, because the Abia state government called for its cancellation to ensure it was not hijacked by hoodlums.

The Abia state government in a press statement signed, by Barr Chris Ezem, secretary to state government, stated that it received information on a planned rally by a civil society group, but called on the organisers to immediately cancel the programme in view of the prevailing security situation in the region in particular and the nation in general.

He noted that the state government was aware that the organisers did not contact the state police command or any other relevant agency to provide security for the planned rally, thereby predisposing the event to the likelihood of being hijacked by hoodlums, thereby possibly leading to the breakdown of law and order.

In view of the above, the state government appealed for cancellation of the planned rally pending when proper security arrangements are firmed up with the police and other relevant security agencies to ensure the safety of the protesters.

The statement however warned that the state government would not tolerate any person or persons to undermine the relative peace enjoyed in Abia.
