The standard-bearer of the Labour Party for Awka North and South Federal Constituency in Anambra state for the 2023 general elections, Prof. Oby Lilian Orogbu, has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its decision to extend the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise by 60 days.
Prof. Orogbu, who spoke to newsmen in Awka, the Anambra state capital, described the extension as well-calculated and a positive response to the yearnings of most Nigerians. She equally seized the opportunity to thank the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, Aishatu Jibril Dukku, for prevailing on the electoral body to extend the CVR exercise.
The Labour Party Representatives candidate then told Nigerians yet to obtain their PVCs to take the advantage of the CVR extension to do the needful, while urging them not to wait until rush hours.
It would be recalled that Nigerians have been prevailing on the electoral body to extend the CVR registration to avoid disenfranchising millions of eligible voters.
Recently, the House of Representatives had, last Wednesday, urged INEC to extend the deadline for the continuous voter registration by an extra 60 days from June 30, 2022, to enable more Nigerians to register. This is because of the general increase in numbers of people flooding various voters’ registration centers across the country. Also, the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, had stopped the electoral body from ending the exercise until all eligible voters had been registered.
Earlier on Wednesday June 22, Mr. Dukku, while briefing lawmakers told members during a plenary session that the Commission had agreed to extend the CVR by 60 days.
“The Committee held a meeting with INEC yesterday (Tuesday) and they agreed to extend the CVR, all our resolutions were approved,” she said. The House of Representatives also called on the Commission to deploy additional staff and voter registration machines across the country to meet the objective.
