Governor Ben Ayade has congratulated the newly elected leaders of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in the Cross River state Council.

In a keenly contested chapel election on Monday, Mrs Eme Offiong, of Voice of Nigeria emerged chairman while the correspondent of the Orient Daily newspaper, Joseph Kingston, was elected vice chairman.

Others elected were Richard Ndoma of Leadership newspaper as secretary, George Odok of News Agency of Nigeria and Ike Uche of Vanguard newspaper were elected treasurer and financial secretary respectively.

In his congratulatory message, signed by his special adviser, media and publicity, Mr Christian Ita, Ayade said Offiong’s emergence as first female journalist to lead the Correspondents’ Chapel was historic.

“On behalf of the government and people of Cross River state, I heartily felicitate with and congratulate you on your victory.

“There is no doubt that your emergence is a refreshing dawn for our dear state and for the journalism profession,” he stated.

The governor described the new chapel leaders as thorough-bred media professionals who have paid their dues, saying, Offiong was “not only the first female to attain this enviable height in the state, but also the first Cross Riverian to do so.”

“The rise to the leadership pinnacle of your chapel, in a male-dominated profession, is indeed heart-warming; it is a product of doggedness and hard work. This is a momentous milestone and we are super proud of you,” he further remarked.

While wishing Mrs Offiong and her colleagues a successful and fruitful tenure, the governor expressed optimism that “your administration will usher in a more robust, purposeful and exhilarating relationship between the chapel and the Cross River state government.

“I, therefore, fervently look forward to a strengthened and progressive working relationship with you,” he stated.

The governor charged the new chairman and other newly elected officials of the chapel to ensure that members of the chapel, at all times, uphold the cherished tenets of journalism in their reportage.
