Some students of Anambra State origin under the aegis of National Union of Anambra State Students (NUASS), have said that they are not perturbed by the ongoing industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
According to the union’s National President, Comrade Godwin Echegwo, “NUASS is not feeling the impact of the strike action because it affords members nationwide the opportunity to travel back to the state to actively participate in the Anambra November 18, gubernatorial election.”
Echegwo, who spoke in an exclusive interview with Orient Daily, explained that though they are not happy with the situation, they would use the period to assess the governorship candidates in the race and choose the candidate with the wherewithal to address their myriads of challenges facing the state.
“This is why I left my campus and place of residence in Port Harcourt, Rivers State to Awka and I will remain here throughout the election period. My colleagues are equally home. Some left their parents and friends residing in the north, south and west to Awka. We are not going to return to our various schools till we elect the governor of our choice.
“The industrial action is like a blessing to us because it will help us to be around to assess all the candidates participating in this election. Some assisted the students obtain their voters cards and even to transfer their voters cards back to their electoral wards in Anambra. We will follow all the parties and their manifestoes to select the best man that can address our myriads of problems. These include bursary, scholarship, stipends and others.
“We need these funds to run our academic works successfully. As I am talking to you now, some of our members have dropped out of school due to the inability to carry on their academic and non-academic works like research projects, practical works, tuition fees and other levies. We don’t want this to happen again. That is why we have returned to exercise our franchise. We will not allow anybody to buy our votes,” he stated.
The NUASS national President, however, called on the federal government to expedite action towards resolving the issues with ASUU to enable the students return to school.
