The Aguata zonal office of the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) has held a yield-improvement, modern agronomy practice training for rural farmers of the zone.
The training and sensitisation workshop, which took place at the Uhuala Akpo Civic Centre, was aimed at sensitising rural dwellers on the right crops to cultivate for consumption.
A resource person, Miss Angela Nnopu said: “we are here to work with you to achieve bountiful harvest this year. You need to detoxify your farmland. The chemical to do it is known as lime. It is there in ADP office.
“Hybrid seeds, stems and crops are what are needed to improve harvest. The ministry of agriculture has made them available in their offices. Yellow root cassava has been tested and has proved to be rich in vitamin A, which is needed to regenerate the human immune system. So, even if you are not cultivating cassava, purchase the yellow root cassava in the market to eat healthy,” she advised.
“Oba Super 6 Maize contains vitamin A and other nutrients. It is hybrid. Therefore, apart from achieving smiles from your harvests, it will also make your family eat healthier foods.
“Pesticides, herbicides, are all in ADP for collection. Ask questions on agro chemical uses. If there is confusion at any point, go back to agric office and raise such questions.
“Abuse of Agro chemicals can adversely affect human health. It can destroy crops that you wish to protect. So, use agro chemicals according to specifications,” she directed.
Nnopu gave tips on crop cultivation, harvest, storage, processing and treatment of sick economic trees. She enjoined the rural farmers to form cooperatives. “Start cooperative farming before asking for government assistance with regard to Agric Loans. I do not think government will give you credit facilities to start farming rather they will grant you loans to develop already existing farms.”
