Mourning in Nawfia After Gunmen Attack Leaves Five Dead
The Nawfia community in Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State, is in mourning following a tragic attack by gunmen on Sunday night that resulted in the deaths of five individuals.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants arrived in a Lexus RX Jeep and a Toyota Sienna, opening fire on unsuspecting residents around 8:00 PM in the Umukwa-Umuriam area. The attack left several others injured, including a small child.
Among the deceased are two local youths, 26-year-old Samuel Onyebuchi Nnatuanya and 29-year-old Chukwuebuka Ifeanyichukwu Nwonukwue, both hailing from Adagbe Mmimi village. The other three victims included residents from Ukwulu in Dunukofia Local Government Area, as well as individuals from Ebonyi State and a northern region of Nigeria.
Chief Daniel Okoye, President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, expressed deep sorrow over the killings, condemning the violence and vowing to ensure justice for the victims. “We are heartbroken by the senseless murder of our sons and residents. The Nawfia Progressive Union and town leaders are committed to exposing those responsible,” he stated.
Okoye urged the community to remain calm amidst circulating rumors about the attackers’ motives and origins, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation by the Nigerian Police. He criticized the law enforcement response to the incident, highlighting the community’s demand for accountability and safety.
Efforts to reach the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, for a comment on the situation were unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered. The community is now calling for immediate action to prevent further violence and restore peace in Nawfia.
