Tenants escaped death Friday morning when a 30-room storey-building situated along Edinburgh Road in the Enugu metropolis was gutted by fire, with property worth millions of naira lost.

Orient Daily gathered that the incident occurred around 10am barely 20 minutes after electricity was restored in the area, sparking claims that power surge was responsible for the fire. “It is related to electricity because it occurred immediately after power restoration” a resident of the affected building, Justine, told this paper.

On the assessment of damages, Justine said: “Everybody in the building was affected, including myself. Although  some people lost everything, some people recovered some items. Those at the lower floors were not badly affected but those living upstairs lost virtually everything, though no life was lost.

He further disclosed that prompt intervention of fire service operatives prevented the inferno from torching other buildings near the apartment. “I want to specially thanked the firemen of the Enugu Fire Service who turn up on time to intervene; if not, about three buildings or more would have been affected. I also thank the neighbours around who came to help recover some items from the building, Justine said.

Another tenant, Frank, who was still in shock of the incident, disclosed that he was not around when the incident started but was called over the phone. “I was surprised when I came back and saw that everywhere had been raised down. I am still in shock even though my own apartment was not affected. This is a terrible incident and I pray God will console the affected persons.”

The tenants, who were rendered homeless by the fire, appealed for government and public-spirited individuals support to enable them recover their losses.
