Torrential rains in Abbi and Ozoro communities in Delta state, on Monday night, wreaked disaster with no fewer than 60 houses destroyed in Abi while streets in Ozoro community were inaccessible.
Apart from the residential buildings that were destroyed, the people’s economic crops were completely swept away into nearby river. Investigation revealed that the destruction resulted from a rainstorm that ravaged the communities.
After a report about the havoc to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) by the member representing Ndokwa West Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Mr Charles Emetulu, SEMA officials led by the commissioner, bureau for special duties, Mr Omamofe Pirah, who was represented by the director, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Mr Karo Ovemeso, visited and assured the community that the emergency management agency would report to the state government for prompt intervention even as he consoled them on their losses.
Further investigation revealed that among properties destroyed by the rainstorm were the Abbi police station and a fish and plantain farm, among several other facilities identified by the SEMA officials.
The divisional police officer (DPO) Mr Edmund Knight, further took the SEMA team around the station, where it was discovered that the rainstorm wrecked the water station, electricity transformers and some economic trees. Meanwhile, in Ozoro community, the rainstorm left many of the streets inaccessible with the drainage system filled with water and debris, and turning the township roads into rivulets, many hours after the Monday rain.
Residents who spoke to our correspondent, one of them, Chief Okoro Benjamin, however, lamented the pitiable situation of Ozoro community roads as the fast-developing town suddenly became a shadow of itself with residents stranded in movements.
