Rivers police nabs 15 suspects for kidnap, other crimes

By Amaechi Okonkwo, Port Harcourt The Rivers state police command has paraded 15 suspects arrested in connection with various crimes ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery and snatching of cars from residents in Port Harcourt. Parading the suspects, who specialise in kidnapping along the East West road, at police headquarters in Port Harcourt the commissioner of police, Mustapha Dandaura, said the Rivers state police command had taken the fight against crime and criminality to criminal hideouts along the East West Road, including attacks by hoodlums from Rumuigbo, Eliozu, Choba, Etche and Akpajo, He said the command was poised to tackle crimes headlong and promised to bring the wave of crime to the barest minimum. Among the suspects who confessed to beheading and kidnapping along the East West Road was 25-year-old Joshua Edet from Akwa Ibom state who said he was introduced into crime following a bad divorce between his father and mother and that he had to fend for his helpless mother, a girlfriend and seven siblings all of whom he claimed had deserted him now. Edet, who said he ventured into crime 2011, added that he had lost count of the persons he and his gang had killed since then. He confessed to killing countless number of persons, including women some of whom he raped before killing them. He said their overall boss was one Justice Amadi who he claimed resided and operated from Okirika local government area of the state, saying that he worked with some security operatives around the Bori camp and Rumokoro who provided them arms and cover to beat security check points along the East West road daily. Edet promised to turn a new leaf if given another chance to mend his ways. He urged families of those he has offended to forgive him and pleaded for mercy for those he killed. He explained that his gang engaged in a high-profile kidnap of a paramount ruler from Emuoha last week, adding that they received a ransom a seven million naira ransom out of which his share was N50,000.

Wife of the paramount ruler of Rundele, Dr Nnenadi Omeodu, had told newsmen last week that her husband was released after paying undisclosed amount to the kidnappers.
