WHAT ANCESTRAL CURSE?

A Curse is an evil wish or offensive word used to express violent anger; it is a volatile word spoken to punish, injure or destroy something or somebody. An ancestral curse is an offensive word spoken as a repercussion of sins committed by the Ancestors or parents, resulting in misfortunes, diseases, barrenness, poverty etc.

These misfortunes are transferred from generation to generation. A curse is charged with supernatural power for evil. They are the direct opposite of blessings. When we look at curses and study their evil effects on mankind, we find that they have been responsible for many problems in human lives. An ancestral curse acts as an invisible barrier that shields people away from what God has in stock for them, people who are under a curse will find themselves taking wrong steps and making wrong

decisions. They always fail at the brink of success because the spirit of failure is in operation in their lives. Calamities, sorrows and woes are the order of the day for such. Almost all contradictory Christian living and confessions are results of ancestral curses. A curse like an evil omen has the spiritual power to persecute, destroy and cause sorrow to an erring person or the target.

A curse also comes from violating covenants. Curses give demons legal grounds to operate in life, property or family, these demons begin to carry out their nefarious activities through the ancestral bloodline. These courses run in such families from one generation to the other in “spiritual genes”, by the ruse of inheritance. This is mostly based on the Biblical truths found in the following passages: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; Exo. 20:5; Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations; Deut.

And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according to as thou hast spoken, saying, The Lord is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.

Num. 14:17-18; Our fathers have sinned, and are not, and we have borne their iniquities. Lam. 5:7. Even the entire world is aware of the fact that generational curses can be passed on to children children. That is why when you fill out an insurance form of any kind, they always ask, “Is there a history of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, mental illness or untimely death in your family?” Why do they ask? It is simply because they know that if such problems or diseases are in your family background, then, you are susceptible to such. Whether you like it or not, you are a partaker of whatever runs in your ancestral line, either physically, or spiritually, either good or bad!You may be born again with new nature and baptized in the Holy Spirit; still, there might be an inherited curse. This curse must be separately dealt with. Nehemiah broke his ancestral curse of rebellious spirit before he was able to successfully build the walls of Jerusalem; Gideon did the same thing before the call of God upon his life became a reality

And said, I beseech thee, O Lord God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have sinned. (Neh. 1: 5-6).

“And it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Take thy father’s young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it: and build an altar unto the Lord thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down. (Judges 6:25-26).

It is therefore suggested that all born-again Christians should take a very close look at their ancestral background and see if there is particular or general worship of idols and this should be dealt with accordingly. If not, each time such a Christian sets his hands on any worthwhile venture, there is every tendency that the demon would strongly oppose and such individual will fail and might have to begin again.

A eulogy is defined in the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary as “a speech or piece of writing containing ‘high praise’ of a person or thing”. There are eulogies for the spirits of the ancestors, the custodians of most idols: Every idol has his eulogy. In western Nigeria, the eulogy is called “ORIKI”, Often the eulogy of the family idol is equally used for every member of the family. The use of Eulogies in ancestral worship and idolatry, which form an integral part of the African culture, bring about an ancestral curse. When

member is thereby named after any of the family idols, which often results in complex problems for the person: Parents usually do this because they believe that their children are gifts from the idols they worship.

CAUSES OF ANCESTRAL CURSE“Curses cannot hurt you unless you deserve them. They are like birds that fly by and never settle” (Prov. 26:2 Good News Bible). An undeserved curse has no effect. Its intended victim will be no more hurt by it than by a sparrow. It will not hurt him any more than a swallow flying through the sky” (Prov. 26:2 Simplified Living Translation).

How can I curse those God has not cursed? Or how can I violently denounce those the Lord has not denounced? (Num. 23:8 The Amplified Bible).

Dear friend, the basic truth revealed here is that an undeserved curse has no power over you. Without any justifiable reason (s), you cannot be under a curse. You or your ancestors must have done something to attract it before a curse can operate in your life or lineage. Even in extreme cases where evil men or servants of the devil pronounce a curse on somebody, the curse can not operate unless you have offended. Most often a curse can lie dormant until an action sets it off. Therefore the main cause of a curse is “SIN”. Every act of disobedience is a sin against God. To be continued…
