It was great outing for Aguata Grassroots FC as they emerged Champions of the Igwe Nanka U-17 Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON), Anambra State chapter, Orient Sports reports.
The tournament, which was sponsored by the traditional ruler of Nanka Igwe Godwin Ezeilo was held at the Neros Stadium Nanka.
The tournament which started out with 24 teams on June 12, ended in a penalty shootout.
The two finalists, Aguata Grassroots and GP World Football Academy, Nnewi ended 1-1 in regulation time and were compelled to use penalty shootout to sort out the winners. Aguata Grassroots defeated GP World, 4-2 on penalties.
Both teams had displayed good football artistry with GP World football Academy Nnewi scoring within the first 10 minutes while Aguata Grassroots equalised toward the end of the march, compelling the referee to order a penalty shootout.
Captain of Aguata Grassroots Chukwuka Chebe, winner of the trophy, expressed happiness at the victory.
His counterpart Stanley Ezim of the GP World Nnewi said they did their best placing second in the tournament, which was not bad but urging his team members to strive harder at other competitions.
Presenting the trophy to the winners, the traditional ruler of Nanka Igwe Godwin Ezeilo commended the players for their zeal, dedication and urged them to continue to develop their talents in order to reap the benefits later.
According to him the sponsorship was aimed at empowering Anambra youths to reach international heights.
Executive Secretary of Club Owners of Nigeria Professional Football League, Aloy Chukwuemeka said grassroots sports were the bedrock of football development, noting, that was why we came to identify with the organisers of the event.
He said they have identified three players to join the National team soon.
Vice-President Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), South East, Chigozie Chukwuleta commended the sponsor for a good job.
She urged individuals and organisations to replicate such in their communities.
“Football is good business; it has the potential of bringing economic boom to the state.’’
