Concerned elders of the All Progressive Congress (APC) have provided two options for consideration by the Interim National Working Committee of the party, in a desperate bid to resolve the impasse which resulted in the indefinite postponement of last Saturday’s congress in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
A member of the Elders Stakeholders Forum, Alhaji Angulu Dobi, told newsmen, after a close-door meeting, that the elders had suggested the adoption of the results of the FCT Congresses held in the six area councils in May 2021 or approve that fresh congresses should be conducted after the national convention of the party.
Alhaji Dobi said any of the options will hopefully douse tension as well as encourage peace and unity in the party in the months leading to the February, 2022 FCT area council elections.
“At the stakeholders’ meeting, our thinking was that since the FCT has a very peculiar case from other states, we should be allowed to adopt the results of the last FCT Congress and move forward or we should be allowed to conduct fresh congresses after the national convention.
“Whichever suggestion is accepted will bring peace and unity to the party before next year’s election. The major concern of the elders is that the grievances should be resolved before the election.
“Saturday’s Congress was suspended because we do not want to go into congresses with our house in shambles as it might create more problems for the party. We think it is better to work together as one body to fight the opposition successfully,” Dobi remarked.
He added that the only way forward for members of the APC now is to believe in the future of the party and work collectively to build a strong, united party devoid of rancour and unnecessary conflicts.
“The best way forward for members of this great party is to believe in the principles of the party. The way forward is to promote peace, unity and understanding and by supporting our leaders to enable us succeed,” he said.
In a separate brief interview, the chairman of the APC in Abaji Area Council, Alhaji Mohammed Ashafa, said members were really not happy with the postponement of the congresses in the FCT but stated that the most important thing now was to promote peace and unity in the party.
He hoped that the disputes and disagreements will be resolved before the February election to improve the fortunes of the party in the capital territory, adding that party leaders are putting serious efforts to resolved the disputes.
