The speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Hon Abraham Ingobere, has tasked the incoming chairman and members of the State Internal Revenue Board to improve the  state’s revenue base, describing as poor the internally generated revenue which only accounts for 9% of the total annual budget of the state.

The speaker gave the charge during the screening and confirmation of nominees to the State Internal Revenue Board and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly on Tuesday.

Advising the nominees, the member representing Southern Ijaw Constituency 4, Hon. MacDonald Igbadiwei, charged the nominees to add value to the lives of Bayelsans while the chief whip, Hon. Ebiuwou Koku Obiyai [Yenagoa Constituency 2] admonished the nominees to be conversant with the laws establishing their boards, further advising them to establish good working relationship with civil servants.

Ingobere called for a pragmatic approach to revenue drive in the state, lamenting that about 90% of funds expected to fund annual budget came from the state’s portion of federal allocation.

Although the nominee for the position of the chairman of the revenue board, Dr Nimibofa Ayawei, was asked to take a bow during the screening session, being a former lawmaker, he and the nominee for executive secretary of SUBEB, Chief Victor Okubonanabo, and some other nominees are returning for second term in their respective boards.
