To control the harmful effects of climate change, Ikwo local government area chairman Elder Stephen Orogwu, as flagged off the planting of 1000 trees in the council area.

The tree planting, which would also help in erosion control, shall be stepped down to development centres and academic institutions in the council area.

The tree planting exercise is going on simultaneously across the 13 council areas in the state.

Speaking at the tree planting flag-off, Elder Orogwu noted that besides the beautification of the environment, trees contribute immensely to life.

“Oxygen from trees, through the process of photosynthesis, is essential for human respiration. This oxygen is the air we breathe in and without it, we cannot live. Trees give these freely, and the more trees in an area, the more oxygen in that area.

Elder Orogwu also noted that trees were useful in combating the harmful effects of climate change and encouraged all to embrace this wonderful initiative.

The chairman was supported by the vice-chairman, Mrs. Louisa Onyinye Nweke, the secretary of the council, Mrs. Chinasa Itumo, the development centre coordinators, leadership, and members of Ikwo legislative council, town union presidents, his principal officers, and leadership of the National Association of Ikwo Students (NAIS).
