NSCDC says personnel engaged in crime on their own

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has warned that it will not allow any gullible personnel to tarnish the image of the corps by engaging in criminal activities or using the name of the security agency to avoid justice.

It has, therefore, promptly dissociated the corps from one Abdullah Saidu, a Civil Defence personnel arrested in Kogi state, allegedly in connection with a group of armed bandits terrorising some parts of Koton Karfe local government and Abaji Area council of Abuja.

The NSCDC stated that “the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, as a federal security agency saddled with the responsibility of protecting lives and properties of people among others, would not in any way condone any saboteur of national security or sponsors of criminal activities.

“Based on the aforementioned, the Corps wishes to notify the public that the purported video where the alleged suspect openly confessed to the crime is not enough to give credence to or affirm his membership of the Corps as experience has shown that criminals are fond of impersonating security operatives in order to divert attention, subvert investigation or get away with their crime.

“However, due to the high premium placed on integrity, discipline and professionalism by management of the Corps, an intelligence-based team has been set up to carry out thorough investigation on the matter and check available records to confirm the authenticity of his claim. Thereafter, the general public shall be adequately briefed on subsequent findings.

“We wish to reiterate that the Corps will continue to discharge its statutory mandates without compromise but with humility and integrity, while also synergising with other sister agencies in combating all forms of criminal activities in the nation,” a statement signed by DCC Olusola Odumosu, the director of public relations at the NSCDC national headquarters and made available to newsmen in Abuja assured.
