13 persons were on Wednesday feared dead while 12 others sustained injuries in an auto crash that occurred along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The accident involved Mazda commercial bus with number registration number APP 28 YE and an unregistered, apparently faulty Volvo truck parked by the road.

An eyewitness account said that the 18-seater bus, overloaded with 25 passengers, was moving on the expressway, outward Lagos when the driver suddenly lost control of it. It soon rammed into the stationary, faulty truck.

The witness explained that the crash occurred at about 4:pm at a spot opposite Wichtech company where nine persons among the passengers died instantly while four others were later pronounced dead at the hospital to which they had been rushed for attention.

The spokesperson of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRACE, Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incidents to newsmen in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Akinbiyi said that the cause of the auto crash was wrong over taking by the driver of the commercial bus who lost control of the vehicle and, in the process, rammed into the Volvo truck.

He said that 13 occupants died as a result of the accident while 12 others were receiving treatment for the injuries sustained at a hospital and that “those who were injured were five males, three females and four minors while those who died were four males, five females and four minors.”

The TRACE PRO added that the corpse of the 13 people had been deposited at the same hospital morgue.

He, therefore, commiserated with families of the deceased, while sounding a note of warning to drivers or motorists to desist from turning the road side to a mechanic workshop for repair of broken-down vehicles, because of the type of risk that occasioned the road crash.
