Stakeholders and Civil Society groups in Anambra state have condemned in strong terms the Wednesday attack on a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof Chukwuma Soludo.
The foremost economist and governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was attacked at the Civic Centre in his Isuofia country home while addressing youths.
Three of his security personnel were reportedly killed during the attack while others were injured but Soludo was taken out of the venue unhurt.
Anambra Police Command said it had arrested one of the suspects and still hunting for others.
Reacting, a prominent indigene of the state, Sir Jude Emecheta, said it was shocking such a thing could happen to someone like Soludo in his own State. “I wonder how some people would want the former CBN governor dead. Those who are instrumental to it would face the wrath of God soon,” he noted.
A civil society organisation, Anambra Civil Society Network (ACSONET), also condemned the attack, describing it as scary and absolutely unacceptable. Chairman of the group, Prince Chris Azor said the incident was one of the envisaged early warning signs precursory to the vital election.
The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) on its part, described the incident as barbaric, most condemnable, horrendous, inhuman and despicable. The Chairman, Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme said, “There is no justifiably reason to attempt to take away life of any citizen which is the greatest gift from God and protected by the constitution.
“We pray for the eternal repose of souls of gallant and patriotic officers who lost their lives and for God to give the bereaved families fortitude and grace to bear and endure the irreparable and irreplaceable loss.”
He said adequate compensation should be paid to the families of officers who lost their lives and unconditional release of Hon. Commissioner for Public Utilities said to have been abducted at scene of the incidence.
“We appeal to our indefatigable CP Monday Kurya to order for discreet and in dept investigation of dastardly act and to beef up security around all governorship aspirants.
“We wish to reiterate our early appeal on Anambra political gladiators and their supporters to play the game of politics according to the rules as November 6 governorship election draw near and for politicians to think about next generation, peace, security and interest of our dear state,” Ezekwueme stated.
Members of the Youths Earnestly Seek Soludo, a foremost youth organization advocating for Soludo’s candidacy in the upcoming November 6 Anambra Governorship elections, also condemned the attack, demanding for special investigation and proactive measures to ensure that perpetrators were brought to book.
The group, in a statement signed by its Covener, Dr Nelson Omenugha, also called for useful information and support in efforts to secure timely release of Engr. Emeka Ezenwanne who was kidnapped by same criminal elements at the meeting venue.
“Members of YESS Anambra condole with the families of the slain Security men, praying God to grant their souls eternal rest. The Group further called on her teeming members and Ndi Anambra to remain calm, prayerful, resilient and more vigilant, going forward”.
