The University of Calabar (UniCal) has said that it would confer honorary doctorate degree, Business Management, on Dr Innocent Chukwuma and Dr Kamoru Ibitoye Yusuf during its 34th convocation ceremony billed for Saturday, March 27, saying the duo were picked for contributing significantly to the improvement of lives of many Nigerians.
UniCal vice chancellor, Prof Florence Banku Obi, who made this known, Tuesday, during a pre-convocation press briefing, said “This year, we shall be recognising two Nigerians who have distinguished themselves in the manufacturing sector. They are Alhaji Kamaru Ibitoye from Ilorin and Chief Innocent Chukwuma of Innoson Motors.”
She also disclosed that the convocation proper would be preceded by Convocation Lecture, titled ‘The National Question and the Challenges of Nationhood in Nigeria,’ scheduled for Friday, and that the minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, would be the guest lecturer.
“On the 25th, we will be having our research fair and exhibition to showcase what we have to offer our society. The Convocation lecture will be delivered by the former governor of Rivers State and now minister of transport, His Excellency Rotimi Amaechi,” the VC stated.
Prof Obi, who said the institution would also award First Degrees to 4431 graduands, PGD to 154, Masters to 187, PhD to 56 and Ordinary Diplomas to 127 graduands, noted that out of the number, 22 would be returning home with First Class Degrees.
The VC explained further that the huge number of graduands was not limited to one particular academic session but that it cuts across different academic years, adding that the scenario was a pointer to the resolve of management to clear backlog of students who could not take part in other convocation ceremonies due to one issue or the other.
“The climax of the convocation proper will be on Saturday. This is when we will be awarding degrees, certificates, and higher degrees but before that event, we will be having a ground breaking ceremony for open and distant learning centre which is tagged CAM-WIRE UniCal ODS Centre.
“For this year, we have 22 First Class graduands, we also have 1073 2nd Class Upper garduands while lower class honours are 2763; 547 with 3rd class and 26 with Pass degrees. 127 will have ordinary diploma. We are also graduating 154 with Post Graduate Diplomas, 187 Masters students and 56 will be given UniCal PhD,’ she stated.
