Ebonyi PDP flays Umahi’s 2023 presidential endorsement by NANS
By Ruth Oginyi
The factional leadership of the People’s Democratic Party in Ebonyi state said the endorsement of Governor David Umahi for president by the National Association of Nigerian Students was commercial.
Barr Silas Onu, the faction’s publicity secretary, in a statement, pointed that no student body worthy of its name will endorse a governor who has zero interest in education for president and challenged the governor to mention one person that has received any form of scholarship from his administration since 2015 till date.
Onu claimed that Umahi’s endorsement was as NANS president and not as Nigeria’s president. “Last week, social media platforms were bombarded with sponsored posts concerning a badly planned procured endorsement of Governor Umahi for President.
“My immediate reaction was, president of what? It then dawned on me that NANS and the people (warriors) in Dave’s government are the same. Therefore, it must be an endorsement for the governor to become NANS president in the nearest future since he is now engaging in the activities that NANS members are known for as a governor.
“NANS, as wrongly portrayed in their commercial endorsement, is not a body of students. It is a body of thugs and commercialises those who masquerade as students to exploit the “mugus” they can obtain. So, it is not a surprise that a major one has been obtained substantially.
“No student body worthy of its name will endorse a governor who has zero interest in education. Once again, I challenge the governor to mention just one person that has received any form of scholarship from his administration since 2015. There is none and so, I won’t expect any response.
“My worry is that leadership in Nigeria has become all-comers affairs and people who got into office by chance are also parading themselves as leaders when their actions prove otherwise. Nigeria has become so downgraded that a man whose only record in governance is that of utter wastage on egoistic projects with no direct or indirect positive impact on the lives of the people. Imagine building an ecumenical centre and then after claiming to build it with N10b, it now an event centre – how convenient! Anyway, since he has been endorsed to preside over NANS, who am I to challenge that? I wish them well”.
