Nigeria Champions, Plateau United manager, Abdul Maikaba, says the Tin City side are not yet ready for 2020/2021 CAF champions League but that they would attain continental competitive form with the ongoing Gov Okezie Ikpeazu Preseason Tournament which got underway in Aba on Sunday, Orient Sports reports.
United fought through the skin of their teeth before a 1-0 win against a non league side, Abia Greater Tomorrow FC, owned by former Super Eagles captain, Uche Okechukwu.
Maikaba was emphatic when he declared after the Sunday afternoon thriller that his boys would be ready for the clash against Simba of Tanzania after going through the Ikpeazu Preseason Tournament.
“We are not yet ready for the CAF champions League. That’s why we came here for this preseason tournament and it is my hope that the tournament will help us get fully ready”, Maikaba said.
“I told the players that this tournament is important in our preparation for the match against Simba.
“And I believe in few days time, the team will be ready.
“Fitness wise, yes, they are picking up”.
Maikaba has had managerial spell in Enyimba and as a result is not new to the Aba football freaks.
He would go on to pay huge tribute to Abia Greater Tomorrow team for giving his side a run for their victory.
“They are a good side, young, enterprising and determined.
“It’s just that we are a bit more experienced, that’s what gave us an edge.
“If not, had they been a bit more experienced and perhaps scored, the result could have been different”, Maikaba stressed.
