Massive clear out of unproductive players has swept through Nnewi United as the Anambra Lions move to put their season back on track, Orient Sports reports. Checks reveal that no fewer than 10 players were shown the exit door during the mid season transfer window.
Similarly, seven fresh legs were injected into the squad by coach Fancy Ewulu. Though names of those pushed back into the labour market were not made public in order not to diminish their market values, coach Ewulu revealed that the exercise was part of the mandate given to him by the hierarchy of the club to prune down the numerical strength of the club.
“When I came, I noticed the team was overcrowded with many of the players unproductive”, Ewulu revealed. “I could not imagine 37 players on the club’s payroll. I said, the number was outrageous, more so when many of them are short of technical requirement which was reason the club wasn’t doing well then.
“So, in exercise of the mandate given to me by the management to prune down the team to a manageable size, I had to drop 10 players”.The gaffer said for the team to bounce back to competitiveness, he had to inject some breath some freshness and steel into it.
“Yes, I brought in some players to refresh the team. About seven of them, including Sochima Elum who scored the goal against Dynamite FC”, Ewulu explained. “I brought in attackers, midfielder and central defenders to bolster to team and you can seen the zeal, cohesion and commitment it the team now”. Nnewi United are in the Southern Conference B1 of the Nigeria National League, NNL.
