By Sab Osuji
The ongoing first edition of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu Preseason Tournament as well as the upcoming Abia Governor’s Cup competition has been viewed as ‘football revolution’ in the South East State and is primarily aimed at helping the youth discover and horn their talents for a better footballing career, Orient Sports reports.
Governor Ikpeazu who is the tournament sponsor spoke at the Aba Stadium while watching the clash between The People’s Elephant, Enyimba and Cynosure which the former won 4-0.
Ikpeazu said the Preseason Tournament would be an annual event.
“The Preseason Tournament is aimed at helping the teams technical officials prepare their teams well for their various (league) competitions”, starts an obviously delighted Gov Ikpeazu.
“So, watching the game (Enyimba vs Cynosure), I would say I’m seeing some quality football display, I’m seeing that spirit of commitment, skill and determination.
“And of course, I can see some huge players (on the side of Enyimba) and I know that huge people don’t make good athletes but here, they are up with brilliant skills.
“You don’t judge a team with just a single match but I think I’m impressed with the performance so far.
“I want to assure you that Gov Okezie Ikpeazu Preseason Tournament is not going to be a one off thing.
“We are going to sustain it to an annual event because we are looking at empowering the youth, taking them off the streets and of course, you know how lucrative football has become across the World.
“So, we want to provide that platform, through the Preseason Tournament and the Governor’s Cup for our youth to discover and horn their footballing talents so as to make a big and successful career out of it”, Governor Ikpeazu said.
