Shorunmu blames Euro based stars for NPFL players Eagles snub
Ike Anubi Shorunmu has blamed Nigeria’s plethora of Europe based professional footballers for the persistent snub of NPFL players in the senior national team, Super Eagles, Orient Sports reports.
Shorunmu, a former Super Eagles and Besiktas of Turkey goalkeeper, says the legion of Eagles foreign players have not done enough in encouraging their domestic league counterparts by sharing their experiences and gains while playing with the Super Eagles with their colleagues in the domestic league.
The former Super Eagles and U23 Olympic Eagles goalkeepers trainer says this has affected the home based players progress in the senior national team.
Shorunmu spoke on the backdrop of the continuous call for the inclusion of home-based players in the Super Eagles ahead of the team’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against the Squirrels of Benin Republic and Crocodile of Lesotho on March 27 and March 30 respectively.
In the aftermath of the travel restriction by some European countries, following the Covid-19 resurgence, some of the foreign based players earlier included in Rohr’s 24-man Super Eagles list for the two but crucial games have pulled out of the make or mar games.
Shorunmu thus advocated for the inclusion of the NPFL players in the Super Eagles but warned the available foreign based ones to be humble and share their experiences with their NPFL colleagues.
“Most of the NPFL players will be showing to their (Eagles) coaches that they (foreign based players) are more than them which is not right”, starts the former Shooting Stars Sports Clyb, 3SC, goaltender.
“This is because the coaches that called you, saw you from the clubs and if you are not good in your club side, the national team coach will not invite you in the first place so, whatever thing you are getting in the national team, when you go back, share with your team mates”, Shorunmu said.
The former Heartland, Enyimba and FC Ifeanyi Ubah goalkeeper trainer would however expresses satisfaction with the quality of players the domestic league is now producing.
