Coach Shina Afolabi of Cynosure FC, Abakaliki has become the first major casualty of the ongoing Gov Okezie Ikpeazu Preseason Football Tournament after he was shown the exit door on Monday, Orient Sports reports.

This follows the team’s shock 2-1 defeat by A&A Football Club in their second group match at the tournament on Monday. The result put the team’s possible qualification for the group stage on the cliff hanger having earlier lost their opening game 4-0 to Enyimba.

Orient Sports understands that Afolabi’s hitherto assistant, coach Joseph Popoola, has been elevated to the status of head coach under temporary arrangement while the search for a substantive head coach has commenced.
The club said in a statement late Monday night that Afolabi’s departure was on mutual consent following a meeting between both parties.
“We announce today that the decision has been taken to part company with our head coach, Shina Afolabi”, the statement read in part.

“Cynosure and Afolabi have agreed to mutually part company today (Monday November 16) following discussions between both parties.
“The club would like to thank Shina Afolabi for his efforts and wish him well in his future endeavours.

“We have asked coach Joseph Popoola to take responsibility for the team on interim basis as head coach. We have full confidence in Joseph Popoola to take us forward”, the statement added, saying the club have opened the process in the search for a substantive coach.

“The search for a new head coach is underway and we will make further announcement when that process is completed”, the club said.
Orient Sports checks revealed that coach Afolabi has had managerial spell at Prime FC (now Osun Utd) before joining Cynosure FC last year.
President of the club, Chidi, fumed with rage over the harvest of woes that has become the bedmate of the club in recent times despite thrilling performances on the pitch.

“Our games have always been a beauty to watch. We always outplay our opponents but once we score, be sure that the opponent would exqualise late on because we failed to score again or couldn’t manage the game well”, the club boss roared.
