Ebonyi state police command has urged residents of the state to assist police in its crime-fighting effort by providing timely and credible information on criminal activities and persons with suspicious moves. The call was made by the command after two persons shot dead by unidentified gunmen were found at presco junction, Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital.
Police public relations officer in the state, DSP Loveth Odah, who made the disclosure in a press statement over the weekend, expressed frustrations that residents of Ebonyi state have refused to feed police with adequate information that could enable police track down hoodlums behind the latest wave of cult killings.
Orient Daily gathered that about 19 persons have so far been killed between November 29 and December 4, 2020, following cult clash between two confraternities, Bagger and Ayees, in the state. It was alleged that Oriuzor community in Ezza North had witnessed most of the killings as 17 persons have been shot dead, including a man and the girl friend in the area.
Mrs Odah, while confirming the shooting, said that one person was seen lying in the pool of his blood at Presco, while another person, Bartholomew Chukwuma, was shot around Oganiru Bar. The victim, who was reportedly alive when police visited the place and rushed him to federal teaching hospital, later died.
“On December 1, 2020, one Emmanuel Anieze was found in a pool of his blood with mark of bullet wounds all over his body, while Chukwuma Bartholomew, aged 25 years old, was badly macheted, and was laying around Oganiru bar.
“The victims were rushed to FETHA 2 Hospital, where doctor confirmed Emmanuel Anieze dead. The corpse was deposited in the mortuary. Still, the same day, at about 4:30 pm, Chukwuemeka Bartholomew gave up the ghost. The manager of the bar was arrested for questioning. Also, a Lexus car that was smashed with bullets was also recovered at the scene.”
According to the PPRO of Ebonyi state command, operatives of the command have commenced intensive manhunt for the perpetrators.
“The matter have been transferred to the state headquarters”, she disclosed; while urging residents of the state to assist the police in tackling rising crime wave in the society.
“We keep hearing rumor that people are being killed, but I will tell you that it was last four days that a distress call came that someone was lying in pool of his blood at Presco junction, and we rushed to the place.
“Members of the public should give police information to serve them better. We should not allow Ebonyi to be hijacked by miscreants. Your information is protected. Please, give us information about these killings; the cultists are people’s brothers and husband. So, they should open up”, Odah pleaded.
