Police foil robbery operation in Anambra after 30 mins of gun battle

The Anambra state police command, yesterday, foiled a robbery operation along Ideani /Alor Road in Idemili North local government area of the state, after 30 minutes of gun battle with over 25 heavily armed robbers.
Police source told Orient Daily that Puff-Adder operatives together with patrol team attached to Nnobi Division, while on stop and search duty around the area, received a distress call that robbers blocked Ideani/ Alor Road and were robbing passengers inside a commercial bus.
“The police operatives mobilised and quickly rushed to the scene and engaged the hoodlums in a fierce gun battle, which lasted for over thirty minutes, forcing the armed robbers to jettison their robbery operation and fled into the bush,” the source narrated; adding also that one cut to size Pump Action gun and a Mitsubishi L300 bus with Reg. No. XD660JJ, were among exhibits recovered at the scene.
The source informed that the recovered vehicle belong to one Onyeka Mgbatogu of Awuda-Nnobi in Idemili North LGA, which was snatched from him by the thieves at a gunpoint.
It added that manhunt of the fleeing suspects is still ongoing to arrest and bring them to justice.
In a related development, police detectives attached to Okpoko Division in Onitsha, arrested one Ekene offorka, 19 years, and Ekene Ndidigwe, 18 years, both of Ezeagu in Enugu state.
Police report, which was made available to this paper said that the suspects specialised in stealing people’s tricycles at night, using high technical knowledge of defusing any tricycle security.
The report said that the two robbers were arrested for stealing a tricycle belonging to one Ekeson Pius of Udeaja Street, Okpoko, last Wednesday.
“The tricycle was recovered and case is under investigation after which suspects will be charged to court for prosecution,” the report added.
Also, police patrol team attached to Eziowelle Division, in conjunction with vigilante group in Abatete, Idemili North LGA, arrested one Ikwumelu Chinwoke Emmanuel, 22 years.
Official report from the command’s Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, informed that the suspect boarded a tricycle along Olulu-udu, Ogbu, Abatete, and stabbed the tricyclist, one Monday Elom, 34 years, in a bid to snatch the tricycle.
In another development, police detectives attached to 3-3 Division in Onitsha, arrested two private security personnel, Ogbanna Clement, 34 years, and Udeh Orji, 21, who were attached to Independent Layout Estate, Nkwelle Ezunaka, Oyi LGA.
Police source said the suspects conspired and robbed one Ogbonna Usulor of his phone and other personal belongings.
The source said that the 3-3 police operatives also arrested one Obi Alexander, who conspired with one Felix Ekuneme, 48 years, and stole a Toyota Camry belonging to one Ozoemana Madu of Tobis Estate, Nkwelle Ezunaka, where it was parked.
Meanwhile, the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP John B. Abang, has reassured all Ndi Anambra that the command under his watch, will continue to work assiduously until crime in the state is reduced to the barest minimum.
The CP also implored residents of the state to cooperate with the police and report suspicious person(s) or movement(s) to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency number – 07039194332 for prompt action.
