Police arrest man over alleged underwear theft in Delta Hotel

Police detectives attached to the’ A” Division police station in Asaba, Delta state have arrested a middle-aged man, identified by the police as Steve Mkpor, while trying to run away from a popular Asaba guest house in the wee hours of Tuesday. He was alleged to have stolen the personal effects of Ogbueshi Odiachi and the wife. Odiachi, who confirmed the incident to journalists in Asaba, said that the suspect came to guest house on Monday night, in crutches, claiming that he hailed from Ogwashi Uku and was in Asaba for medical treatment at the Federal Medical Center (FMC, Asaba). Odiachi added that a room was assigned to him on the ground floor due to his ill health.
He said “When I got up about 3:00 am to collect my phones at the sitting room, I observed that the two phones in the sitting room were switched off and that prompted me to go to the flower vase where I usually keep my car keys only to discover that the keys were not there.”
He disclosed that he and his wife went to suspect’s room and enquired about the car key. He said the attitude of the suspect prompted his wife to pull off the mattress on the bed. He said the suspect tried to prevent her to no avail. It was noticed that a wrapper containing some items fell on the floor and when unwrapped, they found three of his pants, his wife’s brazier and the gate key, all wrapped in a black cellophane bag.
He said that, on the discovering the items, the suspect pleaded with him not to expose him and offered to give him and his wife the sum of N10,000 to cover up the incident.
The Odachis, instead, called in the police from the ‘A’ division police station who took the suspect away.
The police public relations officer in the state, DSP Onome Onowakpoyeya, confirmed the incident saying that the suspect was in the police custody for further investigation.
