Former Kwara United coach, Samson Unuanel believes the duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and Victor Osimhen have the chance to win the Africa Footballer of the Year Award this year.

Unuanel stated this on the backdrop of the two players’ scintillating performance for their respective clubs in Europe.

Recall that on Saturday, Iheanacho was voted the English Premier League Player for the month of March. The Leicester City forward scored five goals in March, including the equalizer against Brighton & Hove Albion, a stunning volley away at Burnley, which was in contention for the Budweiser Goal of the Month award, as well as the hat-trick in Leicester’s 5-0 demolition of Sheffield United at King Power Stadium.

Until the March international window, Iheanacho scored in all the last three consecutive matches for Leicester.

On the other hand, Osimhen has also been in good goal-scoring form for Serie A side, Napoli until injury slows down his game and then covid-19. He was in superb form for the Super Eagles, scoring in the team’s 3-0 win over Lesotho in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Speaking with Completesports, Unuanel said that Iheanacho and Osimhen have a good chance to be named the next Africa Footballer of the Year award if they maintain their good form till the end of the year.

“Kelechi Iheanacho has been one of Super Eagles’ most impressive players in the month of March going by his goal-scoring feat with Leicester City in the Premier League.

‘He has shown that he can hold his own if given the chance by the manager, and for the few games he has started he has proved his worth. Besides, being named Premier League player for the month of March is not a child’s place if not that he truly worked for it.

“If he maintains this form till the end of the season or this year I won’t be surprised if he is named the Africa Best players by CAF. He and Victor Osimhen of Napoli have shown that they can be Africa’s standout players this season and I just pray they continue to maintain good goal-scoring form.”
