The electoral crisis rocking the Ohanaeze Ndigbo may have taken a new turn as youth wing of the Igbo social cultural organisation have rejected the election of Professor George Obiozor as the new President General, and pledged loyalty to the Chidi Ibeh led faction.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Igbo youth wing, Chief Osmond Nkeoma, who made the position of the group known in Owerri lamented that politicians have succeeded in hijacking the selfless group.

He described what happened on Sunday during the election of Obiozor as a well thought out script plotted by politicians.

“Have you ever seen where it has happened before, where a consensus candidate is approved by Ohanaeze?” Nkeoma asked.

Speaking on the parallel election conducted by the Chidi Ibeh led faction, Nkeoma said: “I can tell you that Ohanaeze has been politicised. The election that produced Ibeh is legitimate because it was held at the secretariat. I want to use this opportunity to congratulate Chidi Ibeh as the authentic President General of Ohanaeze. We are solidly beside him,” Nkeoma said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Professor George Obiozor, on his election as the new President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Recall that two different elections held consecutively on Saturday and Sunday produced Chidi Ibeh and George Obiozor as the President Generals of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Reacting, Buhari, in a statement by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, urged the eminent diplomat and scholar to deploy his immense experience within and outside government to forge greater unity of the country.

“Given Prof. Obiozor’s rich background, especially in international affairs and pan-Nigerian commitment, I have little doubt that his election is well-deserved and will serve not only the interest of Ndigbo, but also that of his fatherland.

“We need all hands to be on deck for this country to move forward in peace and unity,” he added.

While wishing the former Director-General, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) a successful tenure, Buhari urged Prof Obiozor to be a “unifying force beyond his immediate constituency.”
