The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps in Ogun state says it secured conviction of no fewer than five persons for pipelines and electricity cables vandals in the state in the year 2020. It further disclosed that about 15 vehicles, generator pumping machine and over 1000 Gerry cans were also forfeited to the federal government by the command during the previous year.
The Ogun state commandant, Hameed Abodunrin, who disclosed this in Abeokuta, said that these were part of the command’s achievement in the year 2020 in combating pipeline vandalism, among other crimes in the state.
Abodunrin said that since the command was saddled with the primary function of protecting pipelines from vandalism, it would not relent in its effort of bringing perpetrators of vandalism to book.
He said “In 2020 about five were jailed for vandalism of pipeline and electricity cables and about 15 vehicles were forfeited to the federal government by the federal high court.”
The commandant, while sounding a note of warning to criminals impersonating as officers of the command to perpetrate heinous crimes, said that such person if caught would be arrested and prosecuted in the court of law. He was reacting to a suspect arrested by the police recently who using Civil Defence uniform to rob people of their possessions, warning that any members of the public caught using the sticker or anything that belonged to the command would be dealt with according to the law.
Abodunrin said “What actually happened was that the suspect went to our officer’s place at Aiyetoro where he attacked the neighbours, who now called our officers to help.”
“So, he left them and faced our officer, he did even attack our officers directly because he knew his car so he went to his car, removed his uniform and set the car ablaze. He did that to distract attention because, as they were battling to put off the fire, he escaped,” he added.
