Anambra disability community hails Obiano over welfare
By Lawrence Nwimo
The special adviser to Anambra state governor on Disability Matters, Barr. Chuks Ezewuzie has commended the state government for its giant strides in improving the fortunes of people living with disabilities in Anambra state.
Ezewuzie said this during a press briefing with journalists at Women Development Centre, Awka, in commemoration of the governor’s seven years in office. He stated that the governor should be applauded for his numerous interventions in the plights of people with disabilities, noting that their inclusion into the governance of the state, through appointments, was a big achievement by the governor.
Ezewuzie extolled Obiano’s empowerment initiative aimed at equipping people with disabilities in various communities in the state with specialised skills to fend for themselves, saying the empowerment had dissuaded people with disabilities from street begging.
Ezewuzie stated that the seven letters of ‘ Empower’ defined Obiano’s seven years of giant strides in the disability community and commended the governor for choosing to show persons with disabilities ‘how to fish’ through his empowerment programmes. He added that such an initiative had helped to bridge the gap of opportunities for persons with disability in the state.
He recalled that Governor Obiano employed several persons with disabilities into the state civil service workforce and even promoted civil servants with disabilities who he said had stagnated in various positions in the state civil service. He also reminded that the governor employed five sign language interpreters to facilitate ease of communication for the deaf in the state.
Meanwhile, the chairman, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) Anambra state chapter, Ugochukwu Okeke, praised the governor for instituting laws for the protection and inclusion of persons with disabilities in the governance of the state noting that it helped bridge the gaps of opportunities for people with disabilities in the state.
Describing Obiano’s love for persons with disabilities as unparalleled, Ugochukwu who is also a member of the Anambra State Capital Expenditure Bilateral Discussion Committee extolled him for what he described as selfless service and dedication to the welfare of persons with disabilities.
Also, the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Utilities and Water Resources, Mr. Victor Meju appreciated the governor for the opportunities it gave to some of the persons with disabilities to participate in government.
