The Ogun state chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, yesterday, gave Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state a 21-day ultimatum to constitute the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, OGSIEC, for election in the 20 local government areas of the state.
The party also declared as illegal the running of the councils by the caretaker committee whose tenure had been extended twice by the State House of Assembly with a call to immediately constitute OGSIEC for election
The state chairman of NNPP, Comrade Olaposi Oginni, who stated this at a press conference in Abeokuta, the state capital, said that the party had given the state government the ultimatum failure of which would result to legal battle.
Oginni said that the people of state could no longer tolerate the delay in the inauguration of OGSIEC in order to enjoy the dividends of democracy at the grass root level accusing the Dapo Abiodun-led administration of feeding fat on local government allocation.
The chairman said that the party had resolved to take the matter to the court of law if the government failed to set up the OGSIEC at the end of the 21-days ultimatum saying that the party was ready to do everything within its power to make sure that the whims and caprices of successive governors in the state
He said “We are in a constitutional democracy and if there is a bridge of constitution the best thing to do is to go to court of proper jurisdiction to adjudicate and look at the matter failure by Dapo Abiodun to constitute that OGSIEC in 21 days’ time, failure of which we are going to contend that in court.
“The third tiers of the government should not be at the whims and caprices of the governor. That is what the constitution says. And even on morality, if there is no election, will Dapo Abiodun ever become a governor, so why is he stopping those people who want to become counsellors, chairmen, from becoming what they are supposed to become.”
“All what we know us that this government has been feeding fat on local government allocations, corruption of the highest order and NNPP are here to stop that and I know within 21 days he is going to respond positively,” he added.
