Night of ‘red cards’ for Eagles duo

It wasn’t a pleasant weekend football for Nigeria Super Eagles duo of Victor Moses and Semi Ajayi who were both sent off in their respective club games in Europe, Orient Sports reports.

Out of favour Moses was sent off as Spartak Moscow went down 2-0 to Dinamo Moscow in Saturday’s Russian Cup tie with nine minutes remaining in the Round of 16 fixture. Moses, on loan from Chelsea the Chelsea, was dismissed for a second bookable offence by referee Kirill Levnikov.

The 30-year-old had earlier been cautioned in the 15th minute of the clash, and was subsequently shown a red card for his tackle on Russian forward Daniil Lesovoy. That is the third time the former Wigan Athletic, Liverpool and Inter Milan man would be given a red card in his professional career.

Similarly, Nigeria international, Semi Ajayi was equally handed his first English Premier League red card after VAR adjudged him to have blocked the ball with his hand in the clash between West Bromwich Albion and Burnley.

But it turned out as Ajayi’s second red card in his career and sojourn in English football, the first being an FA Cup game against West Ham United in January 2020 when he received two yellow cards.

Ajayi was judged by the VAR to have blocked Matej Vydra’s potential goalscoring opportunity in the 34th minute by the use of his hand.

Initially, referee Mike Dean waved play on but a protest from the Burnley players forced the English official to visit the video review by the pitchside which subsequently found the 27-year-old guilty of a foul.

Sam Allardyce’s side were thus reduced to 10 men at Turf Moor and they face an uphill challenge as they aim to extend their six-game winless Premier League streak since their 3-2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on January 16.

The 27-year-old has been a key figure in West Brom’s defence in this campaign with 24 league appearances and he has two goals to his name as well.

Ajayi is now expected to serve a two-game suspension for the straight red card and he will miss the Baggies trip to Brighton & Hove Albion next Saturday and their visit to Goodison Park to face Everton on March 4.
