3-week-old baby found under teaching hospital staircase

A three-week-old baby girl was found tucked into a bag and hidden under the staircase at the female surgical ward of Alex Ekwueme, Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA).

Orient Daily gathered that the incident occurred at the early hours of last Friday when a passer-by, identified as Pastor Mbam Orji, was going to fetch water.

According to him, he had gone to fetch water from a tap outside the hospital early in the morning when he suddenly heard the cry of a baby. “I was coming out from the ward when I heard a baby’s cry. I saw a bagco bag and a baby struggling inside” he narrated.

Pastor Oji further said, he wondered how the baby was abandoned at the staircase without the notice of the security men who are always at the entrance of the surgical ward.

The public relations officer of the hospital, Mr. Uzordinma Oji, said the management was doing everything possible by ensuring proper medical care for the baby girl at the Neo-natal ward of the hospital.

According to him, “we don’t have such records of any baby missing from our hospital and it has never happened before because we have done all the available investigation, maybe someone brought the baby to dump in the hospital but the baby was not delivered here” he buttressed.

An aide to the wife of the state governor, Mr. Donatus Owoh, said the governor’s wife, Mrs Rachael Umahi, frownedat the act and called on the welfare department of the state ministry of women affairs and child development to collaborate with other agencies to ensure the baby was given adequate care.

When contacted the police public relations officer, in Ebonyi state, Mrs Loveth Odah, she described the incident as shocking, saying further that the issue was still on investigation.
