IPC demands investigation, rescue of missing Vanguard journalist

The International Press Centre (IPC) has called on the Nigerian government to launch an immediate thorough investigation and rescue operation to rescue the missing Vanguard Newspaper journalist, Mr. Tordue Salem.

The Vanguard House of Representatives Reporter is reported missing since Wednesday October 13, 2021.

According to reports, Mr. Salem was last seen within the premises of a Total Filling Station, opposite the FCT, Abuja Police headquarters on Wednesday evening.

The Vanguard Newspaper Editor, Mr. Eze Anaba, who confirmed the incident to IPC, Mr. Salem was yet to be seen as of Monday morning, October 18, 2021.

Reacting to the development, the Executive Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, in a statement signed by the Centre’s Communications Officer, Olutoyin Ayoade, lamented the rising spate of attacks and disappearance of journalists in the country.

The IPC boss said that Mr. Salem’s “Disappearance is disconcerting and the search for him should be accorded high priority by the Police and other security agencies.”

Mr. Arogundade emphasized that “In a country where the rights of journalists and media professionals are continuously violated, concerted efforts by relevant stakeholders are necessary to ensure that Mr. Salem returns to his family and beat safely, and that the safety of other journalists and media professionals is guaranteed.”

THe media rights and development advocate organisation therefore appealed to the federal government and the security agencies to do all within their powers to locate and rescue the missing journalist, Mr. Salem.
