Gambia: Jammeh’s support nosedives as sixth minister resigns in two days
Gambia’s Minister of tourism and culture, Benjamin Roberts, on Tuesday announced his exit from government.
The development shows that President Yahya Jammeh, who refused to recognise his loss in December 1 election, is becoming more isolated.
Roberts is the sixth member in Jammeh’s cabinet to resign in less than 48 hours.
Earlier, ministers of trade, foreign affairs, finance, environment and sport resigned.
Recall that Gambia’s Chief Judge pulled out of Jammeh’s suit seeking to stop inauguration of Adama Barrow as president.
Barrow, who is scheduled to be sworn in as president on Thursday, fled Gambia to the Senegalese capital, Dakar, amid fears of violence.
Senegalese President Macky Sall had accepted to host Barrow at the request of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) after attempts failed to convince Jammeh to accept defeat.
Meanwhile, ECOWAS has pledged to send troops to ensure a peaceful transition of power.
