Lawmaker demands urgent investigation into Nnewi fire disaster
The lawmaker representing Nnewi North Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon Nonso Smart Okafor has called on governor Willie Obiano to set up committee to ascertain the true cause of fire inferno in Nnewi timber market.
Okafor made the call in a motion during a plenary on Tuesday seeking government assistance to the affected traders who he said were still battling with the shock of the incident.
Orient Daily had reported that the Nnewi community was thrown into shock on the 17th of February, 2021 when one of the major markets in the town, the timber market, was engulfed by fire.
According to the lawmaker, the market was nearly completely razed down with goods worth billions of naira, lost following the ugly incident. He called on the state governor to intervene to help the affected traders revive their businesses.
“The people of Nnewi especially those in the market are highly terrified. Properties worth billions of naira was destroyed as a result of over 150 shops which were affected by the fire incident. Over 500 sawing machines and other machines in the market were destroyed due to the inferno.”
He described the timber market as a critical market in Nnewi stating that the market is now a shadow of itself following the inferno. He urged the state governor to ascertain the actual picture of the incident, the materials destroyed and find lasting solution to avert future reoccurrence.
The speaker, while sympathising with the lawmaker, said that Governor Obiano’s administration had supported people in such circumstances and assured that the government would not turn its back on the victims of the fire.
The House, through a voice note, however, resolved that the Assembly should call on the state governor to set up a panel of enquiry as a matter of urgency to ascertain the true cause of the inferno so as to proffer a solution to avert future reoccurrence.
Earlier during the plenary, the members held a valedictory session in honour of late former lawmaker, Hon. Martin Enem, who represented Onitsha South I Constituency between 1991 and 1993.
While the speaker described the late lawmaker as a great colleague of the Assembly, lawmakers in their separate tributes described him as vocal giant during his service to the people and the state.
