By Gabriel Chy Alonta
A member representing Nnewi North Constituency at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Nonso Smart Okafor, has given the assurance to tackle infrastructural needs in the state, as well as to meaningfully empower youths, if elected governor.
Hon. Okafor also promised to address the lacuna and imbalance in education and health sectors, boasting that he had the wherewithal and traceable track records to lead the state.
He, who is also the chairman, House Committee on Social Development, Gender and Children Affairs, gave the assurance when he addressed journalists at the NUJ Secretariat in Awka, the Anambra state capital.
Orient Daily reports that Hon. Okafor is seeking the governorship ticket under the platform of the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), come November 6.
Addressing newsmen, the lawmaker said his passion to help humanity informed his decision to run for the governorship election, and promised to consolidate on the achievement of Chief Willie Obiano in areas of education, health, infrastructure and security.
Okafor, an accountant by profession said: “As former state chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), if given the opportunity, I will specially pay attention to empowering youths in their interest areas. When you sideline youths, we will have cases of restiveness, crime, and other ills, as experienced today. In fact, I successfully presented a bill on youth development and empowerment commission which has been passed in the state House of Assembly, awaiting governor’s assent.
“On issue of education, I want to assure you that if given the mandate, I will tackle the rot in this sector in such a way that our public schools should be standard for private schools to emulate. Why should private schools be the model for public schools?
“The state government has done massively well in terms of security, but I will further entrench this success story. We will train and engage our local vigilantes to complement the efforts of other security agencies because they know the nook and crannies in our communities. We will also establish the Anambra State Intelligence Security Corps, comprising trianed youths who will be working on intelligence gathering.
“We will ensure quality when it comes to road infrastructure so they can last as long as 25 years”.
The APGA aspirant further advised other aspirants claiming to possess governorship experience to stop deceiving people, stressing that no one should claim to have governorship experience above others as none of them had earlier governed the state. The lawmaker said his membership of 11 sensitive committees in the House of Assembly also distinguished him among other aspirants in the race.
Asked if he can square up against Prof. Charles Soludo, the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on IGR averred, “I am not afraid of or challenging Soludo or any other person. I am running for the governorship election and so are they. I cannot be afraid of him but I have respect for everyone. God is the kingmaker. We are not up against anyone. This is why I warn my supporters never to attack anyone”.
He, therefore, solicit the support of party faithful and indeed, entire Anambrarians to achieve his ambition of becoming the next governor of the state, come November 6, 2021.
