Breastfeeding baby, mother crushed dead in Ebonyi auto crash

Four persons Monday evening died in a motor accident that occurred at the tipper garage, Spera-en-deo junction of the Abakaliki, Ebonyi state.
Three occupants of the bus who sustained varying degrees of injury were rushed to the hospital.
The driver of the hummer bus, Ukwuru Elom from Nnoche, Ettam community in Ikwo local government area of the state, died on the spot alongside a nursing mother, her suckling and another student of Ebonyi State University.
Late Elom was said to have retired from the works department of the state university and resorted to road transport while others were businessmen and women who came to the international market in Abakaliki to buy goods.
The driver had loaded from their park opposite international market to their destination in Ikwo but, few minutes they took off, a tipper allegedly lost control from the Spera-en-deo flyover and veered off from the road, onto the other lane, crushing the moving vehicle.
Contacted, the Ebonyi sector commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mrs. Stella Uchegbu, confirmed the accident in an interview and said that it involved two vehicles, an articulated truck and a bus.
“Eight persons were involved in the accident: five females, two males, and an infant. Four persons were injured: three females and a male, while four people died: two females, one male, and a child.
“The injured persons had a head, hand, neck, leg and general body injuries as the accident was caused by overloading and speed violation,” she said.
She said that four handbags and three cartons of goods were recovered from the scene while the victims were evacuated to the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki.
“The doctor confirmed the death of four persons and their corpses have been deposited at the hospital’s morgue,” she said.
