A magistrates’ court in Wuse Zone II, Abuja, on Tuesday sentenced a 26-year-old-man, Abba Madi, to one month in prison for refusing to pay for services rendered to him at Woodridge Cottage Hotel in the sum of N 125, 000.
The magistrate, Mr Lateef Abolaji, convicted and sentenced Madi following his guilty plea. He said that the court sentenced Madi, relying on the admission of the defendant to the alleged offence and his inability to give any sufficient cause why he should not be convicted.
Abolaji also ordered Madi to pay N75, 000 as compensation to the total sum within three weeks.
The magistrate warned Madi to desist from crimes and be a good citizen.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, A.S Oyeyemi, told the court that Mr Emmanuel Idahosa, who resides at No. 4 Kalo Nasko Close Asokoro Abuja, reported the matter on behalf of Woodridge Hotel, at the Wuse Zone IV Abuja, on July 17.
Oyeyemi said that on July 12, Madi, who resides at A2 Presidential Villa Abuja came to the hotel and lodged for five days. The lodging fees, foods, drinks and other services accumulated to the sum of N125, 000. He said the convict in an attempt to pay the money, deceptively made false money transfer through his mobile phone to the hotel account.
Oyeyemi told the court that it was later discovered that the transfer was a false transaction. He said that in the police station, the convict confessed to the crime. (NAN)
