A group, Southeast Development Agency (SEDA) has given member representing Kogi West Senatorial Zone, Senator Smart Adeyemi, a 14-day ultimatum to prove his statement against people and leaders of Abia state or face legal consequences.

The group said that the senator owed the people of Abia state serious explanation having labelled the state an ‘educated’ and ‘enterprising’ people governed by ‘drunkards’ during a plenary at the floor of the National Assembly.

The ultimatum was contained in a release signed by the coordinator, Southeast Development Agenda, Nelson Nnanna Nwafor and Godswill Adiele, the group’s secretary, stating that the remark was an insult to the entire people of Abia state.

It is claimed that Adeyemi’s provocation followed an allegation that Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (representing Abia South) had, in an earlier online publication, insulted Kogi state governor, a claim which the senate minority leader has since denied and said was spurious and ‘fake.’

The group, however, claimed that, even if the Abia-born Abaribe had made such online comment, it was unethical for Adeyemi to make the issue at the National Assembly. “Now, even if Abaribe had published any online material against the governor of Kogi state, was it appropriate for a lawmaker who knows his onions to bring a virtual issue to the physical world at the National Assembly, of all places? When did the senate become a theatre for physical premiering of virtual drama? Smart Adeyemi was off the mark.

Explaining their stand, the group demanded that “the senator should either provide a medical report as a validation of his assertion that governor of Abia state is indeed a ‘champagne drinking’ man or a ‘drunk’; should also show any recorded (visual or audio) to boot to back up his claim if he has any, failing which the senator should officially apologise to the state and its governor and people on a national daily before the expiration of two weeks after the publication of this release.
